Darwin Bucky

A structure that flips the script around temporary structures – Darwin Bucky embraces its impermanence as a strength.

Ideated as a structure that adapts to its environment, Darwin Bucky allows for rapid assembly and disassembly, offering a flexible, sustainable alternative to conventional construction. The triangulated fascia, beyond structural stability, offers enhanced acoustics transforming this exhibition space into an immersive environment. The structure morphs to suit events, relocates with ease, and scales from 12m to 18m, operating solo or interacting into a larger system. Artists, performers, and curators unlock endless spatial possibilities, keeping the experience fresh for all audiences.

A collaboration between disciplines - computational designers, digital fabricators, structural engineers and local artisans.

Darwin Bucky strikes a balance between craft and computation. Precision-engineered in metal, its 1mm folded panels lock into an open 116sq.m plan, creating a 520 cu.m. volume. The ridges that articulate the surface do more than shape the structure– they distribute loads, integrate electrical conduits , and house ambient lighting while ensuring waterproofing, resulting in a space that is effortless and engineered at the same time. The skin also becomes a canvas – its outer surface painted by traditional Gond artists, layering mythological narratives onto a futuristic form. This creates a dialogue between the digital and the handmade, the structured and the fluid, the global and the hyperlocal.
