DESIGN MANIFESTO

At andblack design studio, we embrace a fearless approach to architecture and design, driven by curiosity and a relentless pursuit of innovation.

Our work is not confined to a single narrative; it’s a dynamic dialogue between materials and ideas, where each project emerges with its own distinct identity.

We ask ourselves: Are we having fun? Is this work relevant? What legacy are we building? These questions guide us as we venture down unique paths of exploration.

Material experimentation is at the heart of our practice. Whether it's paper, metal sheets, bamboo, or grass, we push boundaries, optimizing materials to their lightest, thinnest, and most efficient forms. Here, we celebrate precision and ingenuity, squeezing every bit of potential from what we work with—because design should be about purpose, not excess.

Our outlook is global, yet our relevance is deeply rooted in the local context. With experiences from the likes of Michael Hopkins and Zaha Hadid Architects, we infuse our designs with an unshakeable understanding of the Indian landscape. Parametric tools become our means to challenge conventions, reinvent materials, and resonate with the community we serve. We collaborate closely with local artisans and craftsmen, merging cutting-edge techniques with traditional skills to create a fusion that is unmistakably andblack.

andblack is an extension of us—Kanika and Jwalant. As a duo, we form a harmonious union that thrives on balance. Kanika drives sustainable architecture with a laser focus on material efficiency, while Jwalant brings insatiable curiosity to the design process. Together, we push the limits of creativity, ensuring our values and visions align, forming a powerful force that propels the studio forward.

Over the past 12 years, we’ve garnered numerous prestigious awards, but what we cherish most is our recognition within our community. Our projects have become cultural landmarks in Ahmedabad, reflecting our fearless vision and commitment to creating meaningful impacts that transcend aesthetics.

At andblack, we stand unapologetically bold and free, championing a design philosophy that dares to challenge, inspires curiosity, and leaves a lasting legacy.

DESIGN MANIFESTO

andblack design studio embraces a fearless approach to architecture and design. We’re driven by curiosity and a relentless pursuit for innovating beyond the norms. At andblack, we intend to provoke, challenge and ignite conversations which disrupt conventional design thinking. We ask ourselves: Are we having fun? Is this work relevant? What legacy are we building through it? Our search for these answers is what leads us down varied paths of exploration. This often results in a work product that breaks free from singular narratives; forming a dynamic dialogue between materials and ideas, where each project emerges with its own distinct identity.

Our studio’s relevance and design thinking is deeply rooted in the local context fueled by a global outlook.Working with parametric design has given us a chance to innovate at a systems-level, independent of outcomes. It has also allowed us to be more research oriented thus opening up space to explore materials, craftsmanship and modern techniques and technology. Drawing from our years of mentorship under the likes of Michael Hopkins and Zaha Hadid Architects, we infuse our designs with an unshakable understanding of the Indian landscape alongside it.

Material exploration lies at the heart of our practice. Be it paper, metal sheets, bamboo or grass, we push boundaries and our own limits; running with the belief that optimising materials to their lightest, thinnest, and most efficient forms is what brings about precision and ingenuity. To us, design is about purpose derived from untapped potential, not excess. When we find a path untraversed, we foray into it, fearlessly. We consider such territories as room for collaboration, re-invention and resonation with the communities we serve. This fusion of traditional knowledge from local artisans and craftsmen, merged with technological advent and modern design thinking is what creates andblack’s flavour.

andblack also functions as an extension of its founders - Kanika & Jwalant; we’re a duo that thrives on, what we like to call, unified chaos. Kanika is the face of the brand, diving sustainable architecture with a laser focus on material efficiency within the practice. Jwalant, on the other hand, is the creative force bringing insatiable curiosity, research and generative design thinking to their process. This sangam (union) results in designs where form, space, order and proportions are in perfect sync. Together, our values and vision for the studio work in tandem, forming a powerful force that propels the studio forward.

Our oath for andblack is for it to stand unapologetic and free in the face of convention, championing a design philosophy that dares to challenge, inspire curiosity & wonder, and leave a lasting legacy.
